This week in Honor & Purpose, we’re looking at how technology, innovation, and investment are shaping the next chapter for the military community.
From OpenAI’s free ChatGPT Plus offer to veterans, to USAA’s half-billion-dollar “Honor Through Action” pledge, to GE Aerospace’s million-dollar boost for career and skills programs; big players are stepping up for service members in transition.
And while that support grows, AI itself keeps evolving. Our feature this week breaks down the next frontier, Generative AI vs Agentic AI vs AI Agents, and what it means for veterans learning to lead in a tech-driven economy.
It’s a good time to be curious, connected, and building what’s next.

Weekly Roundup
Big Move by USAA: $500 M “Honor Through Action” for vets & families
USAA just launched a new initiative called “Honor Through Action”, pledging $500 million over five years to support the military community in three key areas: meaningful careers, financial security and well-being.
Why it matters: For transitioning service members (and spouses) this is a signal that one of the biggest organizations rooted in the military community is doubling down. The focus on “meaningful careers” maps directly to your mission at Honor & Purpose.
Tech angle: While the story is mostly about advocacy and funding, the “financial security” piece mentions “trusted advice and tools” that help military families plan, prepare and respond. That opens the door to digital tech, fintech, career‐tech tools and platforms aimed at vets.
What to watch:
- How USAA will partner with tech companies or build digital platforms to deliver on the “tools” and “career navigation” promises.
OpenAI Gives a Free Year of ChatGPT Plus to Veterans & Transitioning Service Members
Big picture: OpenAI just rolled out a new offer giving 12 months of ChatGPT Plus—completely free—to U.S. service members and veterans who are within one year of leaving the military. 👉 Read the full story → fedscoop.com
Why it matters: Nearly 70 percent of veterans say employment transition is their biggest challenge. By dropping the $20/month paywall and adding transition-focused example chats, OpenAI is putting a real tool directly into vets’ hands—no hype, no red tape.
How it works:
- Eligible users verify their status through SheerID.
- Access includes ChatGPT Plus, with faster responses and priority access to new features.
- OpenAI is also releasing 100+ veteran-made “example chats” that show how to use AI for résumé writing, interview prep, benefit navigation, and more.
- Early talks hint at future partnerships with the VA and veteran-support nonprofits.
Tech take: This marks a milestone moment - AI is no longer a “civilian-only” resource. Veterans can now test-drive premium AI tools to translate military skills, brainstorm business ideas, or automate career tasks, all at zero cost for a year.
Try this:
🎯 If you’re within 12 months of separating (or in your first year as a vet), grab your free ChatGPT Plus access and spend 30 minutes this week running one transition task—like rewriting your résumé in civilian language or prepping for a job interview using AI prompts.
GE Aerospace & Foundation Pledge $1 M+ to Veteran Causes
GE Aerospace and its associated foundation announced donations totaling over $1 million to support veterans, military service members, and their families—covering both U.S. and U.K. recipients.
Why it matters: For transitioning service members and veterans, this isn’t just charity—it signals a strong corporate commitment to workforce readiness, mental-health support, housing, and career transition.
Key details:
- $250,000 to Fisher House Foundation for lodging support to military families while their loved one is in care.
- $250,000 to Xavier University’s Captain Phil H. Bucklew Veteran & Military Family Center for workforce prep and employer connection.
- Smaller grants to U.K. veteran support charities like Forces Employment Charity and Soldiers', Sailors' & Airmen's Families Association for employment training and welfare services.
- Separate commitments: $500,000 to a visiting professor program at Harvard Kennedy School Belfer Center focused on emerging tech & policy, and $500,000 to the Manufacturing Institute’s “Heroes MAKE America” program to train military personnel for civilian aerospace roles.
- $25,000 to Hiring Our Heroes, a U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation program, to expand career transition and skill-bridge opportunities connecting service members, veterans, and military spouses with private-sector employers.
💡 If you’re a veteran or transitioning service member interested in aerospace, manufacturing or technical careers - check out programs from GE Aerospace (and similar companies) that are actively investing in your transition. Take 15-minutes this week to identify at least one training or workforce program in your field of interest, bookmark it, and set a small step (e.g., submit an inquiry, attend a webinar, update your résumé for a technical role).

Weekly Feature
Generative AI, Agentic AI, and AI Agents: What Veterans Need to Know
You’ve probably used ChatGPT to write an email or brainstorm a business idea. But have you noticed that AI is starting to think and act, not just respond?
That shift marks the move from Generative AI to Agentic AI and soon, AI Agents, and it’s reshaping everything from project management to job hunting.
Let’s break it down without the tech jargon.
Generative AI: The Creator
This is the ChatGPT, DALL·E, and Midjourney world we know today. You give it a prompt, it gives you a result - fast. Generative AI can write reports, design logos, or generate code, but it doesn’t understand what it’s doing.
Think of it as your endlessly talented intern: creative, fast, but waiting on direction.
💡 Transition takeaway: It’s the perfect wingman for rewriting your résumé, crafting LinkedIn posts, or spinning up product ideas. You give it input; it gives you output.
Agentic AI: The Thinker
Here’s where things get interesting. Agentic AI doesn’t just generate - it plans and executes.
Ask an agentic system to “grow my LinkedIn audience,” and it won’t just write posts. It might analyze engagement data, create a posting calendar, and even schedule next week’s content.
💡 Transition takeaway: Agentic AI tools are emerging to automate job search workflows, think finding openings, matching your skills, applying, and tracking progress, with you as the supervisor, not the doer.
AI Agents: The Doers
Combine creativity with autonomy and you get AI Agents: digital teammates that interpret goals, take actions across tools, and adapt to results.
Picture a virtual assistant that monitors your email for opportunities, drafts responses, schedules calls, and follows up; all without you touching a thing.
💡 Transition takeaway: Expect veteran-focused AI agents soon - systems that can handle VA appointments, benefit claims, or even business operations for veteran-owned startups.
Why It Matters
2023 was about using ChatGPT to write emails. 2025 is about building workflows that think, plan, and deliver like an entire operations team.
Veterans who learn to command AI, not just use it, will have a massive edge in the next wave of civilian tech jobs, entrepreneurship, and side hustles.
Action Step:
Take one task you do weekly — writing reports, job hunting, scheduling posts — and ask: Can AI do 80% of this for me? Then test a tool that gets you closer to “agentic” automation.
Because the future isn’t AI vs. humans. It’s AI with humans...as co-strategists.
