Tool of the Week: DoD Skillbridge Updates
Changes Coming to DoD SkillBridge – Here’s What You Need to Know
If SkillBridge is part of your military transition plan, it’s time to pay close attention.
Starting June 30, 2025, the Department of Defense is overhauling the SkillBridge program in a major way. Whether you’re a service member planning your internship, or a company looking to host one, these changes are going to impact everyone.
Here’s the breakdown of what’s changing—and why it matters:
🔁 New MoU Required – For Everyone
Every single company or third-party provider (yes, even the ones already approved) will need to submit a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to remain in the program. Without it? No SkillBridge internships.
📆 Only 2 Application Windows Per Year
Forget the rolling submissions. The DoD is shifting to two short windows per year to accept SkillBridge provider applications. If companies miss the window, they’re out until the next cycle. This could seriously limit the number of available internship spots.
📊 New Requirements for Providers
The DoD is tightening the screws on quality and accountability. Here’s what providers must now demonstrate:
- 💰 Salary alignment – Internships must lead to jobs that pay a living wage
- 📈 Reporting metrics – Expect more detailed tracking and outcomes reporting
- ✅ Job offer rates – Companies need to prove they hire SkillBridge interns
- 👥 Intern volume – Providers must host a minimum number of interns annually
- 📚 Training plans – No more “observe and learn”—DoD wants structured, value-add training
🛑 Not All Providers Will Make the Cut
Based on early chatter, many current providers and Career Skills Programs won’t continue under the new system. It’s simply too much red tape for smaller orgs or those without a dedicated SkillBridge team.
🔍 Why This Matters for You
The DoD is making it clear: SkillBridge isn’t just a break before terminal leave—it’s a pipeline to real employment. They’re aiming to ensure every service member has a valuable experience and walks into a job that pays the bills.
If you’re a transitioning service member, double-check that your desired SkillBridge provider is aligned with the new requirements and plans to submit the new MoU. Don’t assume anything.
✅ Bottom Line
This is a huge shift. The opportunity is still there, but the path could get to be more competitive, more selective, and more structured.
